Child Dental Hygiene
How can I get my kids to brush their teeth?
How can I help stop cavities?
At what age should children see a dentist?
Getting your child to take care of their teeth doesn't need to be a battle! By making it a fun thing early on, they can quickly and easily develop habits that will give them a lifetime of great smiles.
- Wipe your baby's gums with a soft damp cloth after feedings to help clear food residue and stimulate the gums. Once teeth start emerging, use a soft children's toothbrush and brush them with water twice a day. Early establishment of this routine will help your baby's teeth come in healthy and the habit become natural.
- Toddlers love to mimic, so let your child watch you brush and floss your own teeth while they practice doing their own. It's a great opportunity to show them how to do it properly and make it fun. (And an added motivation for you to be diligent with your own care.) You will still need to help them clean their teeth, especially with the hard-to-reach places, as they don't have the physical dexterity yet to do it properly. Bring them along during your own dentist checkups and cleaning so they can become comfortable with the environment and staff.
- Growing bodies seem to be constantly hungry. Keep nutritious, low-sugar, low-acid snacks and drinks handy, and make sure your child's diet includes a variety of foods and enough calcium. Kids are more likely to grab a handful of carrot sticks or cheese, rather than junk food, if the healthy snacks are on hand and encouraged.
- Make it fun! Print off free tooth brushing charts from the internet that your child can color. Schedule regular visits with a dentist who is experienced with and understands the needs of young patients, and has an office environment that reflects that.
- Fluoride and sealants are simple, low-cost procedures that can greatly increase tooth strength and prevent tooth decay. Ask your dentist for details about fluoride treatments or supplements, and fissure sealants, at your next regular checkup.
- Mouth guards are important equipment to be worn during sports and high-risk activities to reduce injuries. Your dentist can advise you where to get them and how to make sure they're properly fitted.
